In the last four years, more than 90 lakh updated income tax returns have been filed, which has received Rs 9,118 crore to the government treasury. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary gave this information on Monday in a written reply in the Lok Sabha. According to PTI news, to encourage voluntary compliance, the government had offered the option to file an updated IT Return (ITR-U) updated IT Return (ITR-U) up to 2 years from the respective assessment year by paying additional income tax for taxpayers in 2022.
4.64 lakh updated ITR filed by 28 February
According to the news, through the Finance Bill, 2025, the government has proposed to extend the time limit for filing updated returns from the respective assessment year to 4 years. In the current assessment year (2024-25), 4.64 lakh updated ITRs have been filed by 28 February and a tax of Rs. 20 crore has been paid. In the Assessment Year 2023-24, more than 29. 79 lakh ITR-U was filed and an additional tax of Rs 2,947 crore was paid.
More than 91.76 lakh ITR-U filed
In the Assessment Year 2022-23 and the Assessment Year 2021-22 40. 07 lakh and 17. 24 lakh updated ITRs were filed and additional Rs 3,940 crore and Rs 1,799. 76 crore tax was paid. Overall, over 91.76 lakh ITR-U was filed between the assessment year 2021-22 to assessment year 2024-25, giving the government an additional tax of Rs 9,118 crore.
Record ITR filing by 31 July
By the scheduled deadline of 31 July, more than 7.28 crore income tax returns were filed, which is 7.5 percent more than the previous financial year. According to the tax department, more than 7.28 crore income tax returns (ITRs) have been filed for the assessment year 2024-25. Last year 6.77 crore ITRs were filed. Out of the total 7.28 crore ITRs filed for the Assessment Year 2024-25, 5.27 crore returns have been filed under the new tax system. At the same time, the number of returns filed in the old tax system is 2.01 crore.
