A total of 54. 03 crore accounts have been opened so far under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana.
Out of the total accounts opened under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, 11.30 crore accounts have become inactive. That means no transactions are taking place in them for a long time. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary gave this information in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha. He also informed that till now a total of 54.03 crore accounts have been opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. According to PTI news, there is a balance of Rs 14,750 crore in inactive bank accounts as of November 20, 2024.
Percentage of inactive accounts reduced
According to the news, the percentage of inoperative Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan accounts for public sector banks (PSBs) declined from 39.62 percent in March 2017 to 20.91 percent in November 2024. As per Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, savings as well as current accounts should be considered dormant/inoperative if there are no customer induced transactions in the account for more than two years. Choudhary said banks are continuously making concerted efforts to monitor the percentage of active accounts and the progress is being regularly monitored by the government.
advised to take necessary steps
Giving this information also, the Union Minister said that banks have been advised to take immediate necessary steps to reduce the number of inactive accounts and to make the process of activating such accounts easy and hassle-free. This includes enabling seamless updation of KYC through mobile/internet banking, non-home branches, video process etc.

Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is the National Mission for Financial Inclusion which aims to ensure access to financial services such as basic savings and deposit accounts, money transfers, loans, insurance, pensions in an affordable manner. Under this, Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) account can be opened in any bank branch or Bank Mitra outlet for those who do not have any other account.
