Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is a national mission for financial inclusion.
By 15 January 2025, more than 54.5 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been opened in the country. The special thing is that about 56 percent of women have accounts in these Jan Dhan accounts. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said this while answering a question in the Lok Sabha on Monday. According to PTI news, the government launched the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) in August 2014. PMJDY was extended beyond 14 August 2018 to give more speed to the government’s financial inclusion initiatives.
30.37 crore account of women
According to the news, Sitharaman said that till January 15, a total of 54,57,80,806 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been opened, out of which 30,37,10,652 crore (55.7 percent) are of women. The minister also gave nomination data for social security schemes like Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJBY), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) and Atal Pension Yojana (APY).
Under PMJBY, till January 15, the total enrollment was 22. 52 crore, of which more than 10 crore were women. In the case of PMSBY, enrollment was 49. 12 crore, out of which 22. 84 crore are women. In APY, till 31 December the total enrollment was 7. 25 crores, out of which 3. 44 crore are women.
What is Jan Dhan account
Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is a national mission for financial inclusion, which aims to effectively bring financial services to all the banking/savings, deposits, remittances, loans, insurance, pension etc. The account can be opened in any bank branch or business representative (bank friend) outlet. It is opened with zero balance. All banks including private banks participate in these activities to ensure effectiveness of government schemes and make them accessible to all stakeholders.
