Union Labor Minister Mansukh Mandavia said on Wednesday that 17.1 crore jobs were created within the country in the 2014 to 2024s. That is, more than 17 crore people got new jobs in 10 years, out of which 4.6 crore jobs were created alone last year. Mandavia said in a webinar on the budget that there has been a significant decline in the unemployment rate. It declined from six percent of 2017-18 to 3.2 percent in 2023-24. During the same period, women’s employment increased from 22 percent to 40.3 percent. The Labor Minister gave credit for these achievements to the progressive policies of the government and said that this has strengthened the workforce of the country.
Social security ‘coverage’ increased
Mandavia referred to the impact of the government’s social security initiative citing the International Labor Organization (ILO) World Social Security Report 2024-26. It states that India’s social security ‘coverage’ has doubled from 24.4 percent to 48.8 percent. He said that the expansion of the e -ram portal, covering more than 30.67 crore unorganized workers and involving temporary (gig) workers under the PMJAY (Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana), explains the government’s commitment to workforce welfare.
12 welfare schemes integrated
He said that the government has also integrated 12 major welfare schemes under the e -ram portal and this portal is available in 22 Indian languages. Apart from this, 10 new ESIC medical colleges have been approved to support the families of workers while 10 other colleges are still under consideration. Labor Secretary Sumita Davra referred to the progress made in the modernization of Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO). This includes enrollment of more than 6.2 crore new members in six and a half years and centralized pension processing system, automatic disposal of PF claims and improvements such as strong IT infrastructure.
