NHAI seeks applications from banks for automatic toll collection on highways

New Delhi, November 3 (IANS). With the aim of making the highways physical toll plaza free in future, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has invited applications from banks for the country’s first Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) for the Dwarka Expressway.

According to reports, if this plan becomes successful, the only toll plaza on the 28 km long Dwarka Expressway will be eliminated and money will be deducted from banks based on the data of vehicles.

Union Road and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has said that toll plazas will be removed from the roads in the coming years. NHAI will involve a bank for Dwarka Expressway, with the help of which tax will be collected from the users.

According to reports, this tolling system will have equipment and sensors, through which the data of passing vehicles will be sent to the electronic toll payment system. After this the information will go to the bank. The bank will then deduct the appropriate amount for toll from the Fastag wallet. If toll is not paid by the driver, then information about non-payment of toll will be continuously visible on the vehicle portal and app.

NHAI is preparing to install multi-lane free flow system on many more expressways.

At the same time, the government will track about 100 toll plazas with GIS-based software for seamless movement of traffic on national highways. The live monitoring and tracking system at toll plazas will help in providing free flow of traffic and hassle-free tolling experience to the users at toll plazas across the country.

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, these toll plazas have been identified based on the feedback received through the 1033 National Highway Helpline.

The GIS-based software has been developed by Indian Highway Management Company Limited (IHMCL), an NHAI company.
