Onion Price update: The central government has taken strict action to control the rising prices of onion during the festive season. Union Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi flagged off a mobile van selling onions at the rate of Rs 35 per kilogram at a program held here on Wednesday.

The Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution flagged off the mobile vans of National Cooperative Consumers Federation of India Ltd. (NCCF) and National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd. (NAFED) deployed for sale here and started the retail sale of onions at the rate of Rs. 35 per kg. At present, onions are being sold at the retail rate of Rs. 60 per kg in most parts of the country.
Addressing the media on this occasion, Prahlad Venkatesh Joshi said that we have a buffer stock of 4.7 lakh tonnes of onion from the Rabi crop. He said that keeping food inflation under control is the priority of the Government of India.

He said that several direct interventions through price stabilization measures have played an important role in reducing the inflation rate in recent months.
Joshi said that the Price Stabilization Fund, launched under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to intervene in the market when prices of essential commodities increase.
In his address, he said that retail sale of onion will provide relief to consumers across the country. The minister said that targeted disposal of onion from the buffer is an integral part of the Central Government’s efforts to control food inflation and maintain a stable price regime.

Retail distribution of onion begins
In a statement, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said that with this programme, the targeted release of onion quantity from the government buffer stock has begun so that this essential vegetable can be made available to consumers at affordable prices.
The ministry said the retail sale of onion is being done through NCCF and NAFED outlets and mobile vans, e-commerce platforms and major consumption centres, Kendriya Bhandars and Safal outlets.
According to the ministry, retail distribution of onions is starting from today in Delhi-NCR and Mumbai. After this, in the next one week, the agencies will cover Kolkata, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Raipur and Bhubaneswar.
After this, its distribution will start all over India by the third week of September. It is worth noting that the Department of Consumer Affairs of the Government of India is monitoring the daily prices of 38 commodities including onion from its 550 centers across the country.
