Brasilia, 5 June (IANS). Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday reiterated India’s strong support for a fair and rule-based global trade system at the 11th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, which actually addresses the needs and aspirations of Global South.
Addressing the work session on the subject of ‘BRICS Parliamentary Action in search of new paths of economic development’, Om Birla appreciated the Brazilian Parliament for the successful organization and thanked him for his hospitality.
He said, “Today, the BRICS group has emerged as a strong force in the global economic scenario. It represents a population of about 45 percent and the purchasing power contributes 40 percent to the Global GDP based on equality. Despite the global challenges, the BRICS countries have made inspiring progress in the economic development.
Birla said, “We are worried that representation of developing countries and such imbalances in major international institutions obstruct global equality and sustainable development. Therefore, BRICS countries should collectively make concrete efforts to increase participation in such institutions.”
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla emphasized that Kovid-19 and other global crises have inconsistently influenced Global South, leading to existing challenges in health, food and energy security.
Birla emphasized that without a strong, coordinated global action, achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) will be difficult for many countries if it will be difficult.
Highlighting India’s economic growth, Birla said that despite global uncertainties and challenges, India’s economic development has been notable.
He said that India has consistently performed better than the average of Global South. From 2014 to 2025, the country’s GDP has increased at a average rate of seven percent, making it the fastest growing major economy in the world.
He said, “India is not only the largest and most vibrant democracy in the world, but also a country with a stable government, which is strong, which is based on the rule of law and which is transparent and accountable. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has made remarkable progress in various fields.”
Om Birla highlighted that India considers the BRICS parliamentary platform to be a very important platform, where a new definition of economic development can be created through joint efforts and dialogues.
On the occasion of the Parliamentary Forum, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla had a meaningful conversation with Hugo Motta, president of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputy and informed about India’s unwavering resolve to combat terrorism.
Om Birla wrote on the social media platform X on Thursday, “A warm and creative bilateral meeting was held with Hugo Motta, President of Brazil’s Chamber of Deputy on the BRICS Parliamentary Forum. Terrorism is a global threat and all countries should unite to eliminate this crisis, a complete eradication of terrorism is a united national resolve to end this crisis.”
He thanked President Lula for the whole of India for the strong support of Brazil in the fight against terrorism. He told the President of Brazil, how India is giving a new shape to its parliamentary democracy through inclusive representation and state -of -the -art reforms. He said that Indian parliamentary processes are now largely paperless. We are protecting our democratic heritage by connecting Parliament with the needs of the 21st century.
Earlier, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and the Indian delegation were welcomed by India’s Ambassador Dinesh Bhatia in Brazil on reaching Brasilia on Wednesday.
The delegation included Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh, Rajya Sabha MP Surendra Singh Nagar, Lok Sabha MP Vijay Baghel, Vivek Thakur and Shabri Bayreddy, Lok Sabha General Secretary Utpal Kumar Singh and Rajya Sabha General Secretary P.C. Modi is involved.
The 11th BRICS parliamentary platform to be held on 4-5 June in Brasilia is an important step towards strengthening inter-mandatory cooperation between the member countries, which has confirmed the legislative branches of legislative branches to strengthen political dialogue, exchange their best practices, exchange of their best practices and create a common agenda aimed at sustainable development, social justice and multilateral rule.
The BRICS has 11 member countries – Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Iran, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia.
Earlier this year, Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan were included as BRICS partner countries.
