Pakistan is facing cash crunch and its debt is continuously increasing.
Pakistan, already burdened with heavy debt, is going to take more loans. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has assured to provide a new loan of two billion US dollars annually to Pakistan, which is facing cash shortage. This information was given in a news released on Tuesday. According to PTI news, the newspaper ‘The Express Tribune’ quoted officials of the Ministry of Economic Affairs as saying that this assurance was given by Asian Development Bank (ADB) President Masatsugu Asakawa during talks with Pakistani officials on Monday.
Expected to be available from 2024 to 2027
According to the news, officials said that Manila-based ADB is expected to provide two billion US dollars every year from 2024 to 2027. This four-year package amounts to a total of eight billion US dollars. Out of these two billion, ADB will provide about one billion dollars at a fixed rate of two percent under its ‘concessional window’. According to a press release issued by the ministry, ADB President Asakawa assured Pakistan of his continued support in public-private partnerships and climate and disaster resilience promotion, among other things.
Appreciated the steps taken by the government
It said he met Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Cheema to discuss the country’s development priorities and macroeconomic reforms and praised the strong and sustainable measures taken by the government to bring about macroeconomic stability. According to reports, ADB has appointed Emma Fan as a new country director for Pakistan.
Fan is a New Zealander of Chinese origin. She will replace outgoing ‘Country Director’ Yong Ye next month. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has also appointed Mahir as the new ‘Country Head’. He is a Turkish citizen. Mahir will take charge in December. Pakistan has been associated with ADB as a founding member since 1966.
