What will be the benefits of the country from the transmission hub
Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the Vizhinjam International Port in Kerala on Friday. The commercial operation of this port started about 5 months ago in December 2024 itself. Along with this, Vizhinjam has become India’s first deepwater container terminal and the country’s first transpiration hub, located near the capital of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram. Transpiration is a port where cargo is shifted from one ship to another for international shipping.
Adani Group will invest Rs 20,000 crore for Vizhinjam International Port
Construction of an estimated cost of Rs 8900 crore started in December 2015 and is being deleted in several stage. The first stage of the project is already operational, while the rest of the stage is expected to be completed by December 2028. Let us tell you that this port is being developed between the Government of Kerala and Adani Ports under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP). So far, Rs 5000 crore has been invested in this project and managing director Karan Adani has recently announced a plan to invest Rs 20,000 crore in this project.
What is transpiration hub
Transpiration hub is a major port where cargo containers are transferred from one ship to another to transport containers to their final destination. Large ships take off containers to these deep water ports and then cargo is transported to small feeder ships that transport it to regional ports, where large ships cannot be carried.
What will be the benefits of the country from the transmission hub
The main objective of the country’s first transpiration hub in Kerala is to reduce India’s dependence on foreign ports like Colombo, Singapore and Dubai. Currently, India depends on foreign ports such as Colombo, Singapore and Dubai for about 75% of its transpirations. But this transmission hub made in Kerala will not only reduce India’s dependence on other countries but will also save $ 200-400 million in transmission costs annually.
Now the world’s largest ships can also be brought here which cannot go to any other Indian port. A large number of jobs will be created from the transmission hub and will boost the country’s economy. It is also very important in terms of security of the country, as it will increase India’s monitoring capabilities in the Indian Ocean. Strategically marine security and trade routes will also strengthen safety.
