The tenure of Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das is going to be completed on 10th December. On Friday, when he was asked about his future, that is, whether he would like to play his role as Governor in the next term also. Das wisely avoided the question asked about this. According to PTI news, Das said on the question of journalists after the monetary policy review meeting on Friday that I am not giving you any headline and I think it would be better that we stick to the monetary policy only.
It was announced to extend the tenure in 2021
According to the news, Das was replying to the question whether he had received any information from the government about whether he would continue in the post even after this term. The government had announced the extension of Das’ tenure in 2021, a month before his term was to end. A committee comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah will decide on the appointment of the next RBI governor. This is the second three-year extension given to Das and he is one of the longest serving governors in the 90-year history of the RBI.
Took charge in difficult times
Amid growing demands to overcome the 5.4 per cent slowdown in GDP growth in the July-September quarter, the RBI on Friday chose to keep rates unchanged for the 11th consecutive time. On Friday, Das clarified that the RBI is working within the flexibility given to the central bank by law, making it clear that its effort is to keep inflation under control. Das took charge at a very difficult time for the RBI, replacing Urjit Patel who had decided to step down before the end of his tenure.
Over the past six years, Das has faced many challenges, including COVID-19 and the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. He has been honored as Central Banker of the Year twice consecutively at global forums for his efficient stewardship of the world’s fastest growing major economy.
