In the next two years, it will become mandatory for four wheeler commercial and private vehicles to conduct vehicle fitness tests at Automated Testing Stations (ATS). The Central Government has issued a notification in this regard on April 5. It is mentioned in this that this rule will be implemented on commercial vehicles from April 2023 and on private vehicles from June 2024.

Officials of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said that from April 1, 2023, the fitness test will be mandatory for heavy commercial vehicles and heavy passenger vehicles through ATS, while medium-sized commercial transport vehicles or medium passenger commercial vehicles and light motor vehicles (private vehicles). For vehicles), this rule will be made effective from June 1, 2024. The ministry had issued a draft notification on February 2, seeking suggestions and objections from the stakeholders. After this, the final notification to implement it has been issued on April 5.
The Central Government has issued a notification on December 22 last year to set up state-of-the-art Model Inspection-Certification (I&C) Centers in 10 states for fitness test stations of vehicles under the junk policy.

On the basis of this model, other states will have to set up I&C centres. Fitness test, certificate and special sticker will be issued for two wheeler, three wheeler, four wheeler, private and commercial vehicles at I&C centers. There will also be an air pollution test facility.
Skilled personnel and modern machines will do fitness test
The staff of the I&C centers will upload the vehicle number, vehicle owner’s name, address, mobile number, etc., on the government’s website for conducting the fitness test. The website of the state government will be linked to the centralized data center of the central government, from which complete information of the vehicle can be obtained in any part of the country. At the centers, with the help of skilled personnel and modern machines, the body, chassis, wheel, tyre, braking system, steering, light etc. of the vehicles will be tested.
