Krishnamurti V Subramanian
Economist Krishnamurthy V Subramanian, who is serving as Executive Director (ED) of India in the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has been called 6 months before the completion of the tenure by the government. His tenure was for 3 years, which was still left for six months. However, the government has not given the reason for calling before the completion of the term. Subramanian was appointed in the IMF in August 2022. On November 1, 2022, he took charge, in which he represented India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Bhutan in the Fund’s Executive Board. Earlier, he served as the Chief Economic Advisor of India from 2018 to 2021.
After all, what can be the reason for calling early?
The government has officially not given any reason to call Subramanian first. However, experts and media reports say that this decision has been taken after tension with IMF on data issues. Subramanian had expressed concern about the quality and reliability of the IMF dataset. Allegedly did not like these objections to the officials of the multilateral agency in Washington. The second reason his book is believed to be. Subramanian’s recent book India @ 100 was promoted and propagated by some as a possible unfairness for his post in the IMF. These two reasons seem to be reasons for early call. However, no official statement has been issued by the government. So these can only be speculated.
IMF will meet on 9 May
Subramanian’s farewell has been done before the IMF meeting on 9 May. The IMF was scheduled to hold an important meeting on 9 May, in which a decision was taken on additional financial assistance to Pa Kistan. It is believed that India will oppose further financial assistance to Pakistan’s consultation in terrorist activities. Pakistan is already raising this issue. At the same time, there has been speculation about strategic and political reasons since the decision to call Subramanian suddenly.
