Good news for onion farmers
The central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday decided to remove the minimum price limit (MEP) previously fixed for onion exports with immediate effect. This decision of the government will help Indian farmers to take advantage of the current situation amid excess onion in the international market.
A limit of $550 per tonne was fixed for onion export
Let us tell you that the government had earlier set a limit of $550 per tonne as the minimum export price. This meant that farmers could not sell their produce abroad at a price lower than this price. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) issued a notification and removed the MEP fixed for onion export with immediate effect. With this decision of the government, now the farmers of the country will be able to increase the export of their onions abroad and can also earn huge profits by exporting at any price of their choice.
Decision taken before Maharashtra assembly elections
This step has been taken before the assembly elections in Maharashtra, which is a major onion producing state. This step is expected to boost onion exports. DGFT said in its notification, “The condition of minimum export price on export of onion has been removed with immediate effect and until further orders.”
Common people across the country are troubled by the high price of onion
Let us tell you that onion prices are skyrocketing across the country, due to which the budget of common people has deteriorated. The price of onion has reached from Rs 50 to Rs 70 per kg in different parts of the country. Whereas in the premium market of big cities, the price of one kg of onion has reached Rs 80. To give relief to the common people from the high prices of onion, the central government is selling onion at the price of Rs 35.
