New Delhi, January 7 (IANS). The number of domestic LPG connections in the country has more than doubled in the last 10 years (by November 1, 2024) to 32.83 crore, from 14.52 crore in 2014. This information was given by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on Tuesday.
An official statement by the ministry said that under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), 10.33 crore LPG connections have been issued to provide cooking gas to poor families at subsidized prices. Since the inception of the scheme, approximately 222 crore LPG refills have been provided to PMUY families and approximately 13 lakh refills are being taken daily.
A subsidy of Rs 300 per cylinder is being given to the beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.
The government’s efforts have led to an increase in LPG consumption by Ujjwala households, the statement said. Per capita consumption of 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinders has increased from 3.01 in 2019-20 to 3.95 in 2023-24. Per capita consumption has increased to 4.34 by October 2024.
The statement further said that the number of LPG distributors has increased from 13,896 since 2014 to 25,532 by November 1, 2024, thereby increasing the availability of LPG to consumers. More than 90 percent of the new distributors are providing service in rural areas.
Apart from this, there has been a huge expansion in the natural gas pipeline network in the country in the last 10 years. Its length has increased to 24,945 kilometers in 2024, which was 15,340 kilometers in 2014.
Apart from this, construction of 10,805 km natural gas pipeline is going on.
Completion of these pipelines will complete the National Gas Grid and will connect all major demand and supply centers in India and ensure easy availability of natural gas in all regions.
