Ahmedabad, 8 July (IANS). According to the Government of Gujarat, the number of taxpayers has increased by 145 percent in eight years since the Goods and Services Tax (GST) was implemented.
The government said that in 2017, where there were more than 5.15 lakh taxpayers, now by the financial year 2024-25, there have been 12.66 lakh registered taxpayers in the state.
Since the implementation of GST, Gujarat has emerged as one of India’s top performing states in terms of tax compliance, revenue growth and digital integration.
The state’s tax system, entangled in the complex trap of Value Added Tax (VAT), Central Sales Tax (CST), octroi and entry tax, has led to a big change due to the implementation of GST under the ‘one nation, one tax’ system, which has not only simplified compliance, but also promoted the economy.
Gujarat’s taxpayer growth rate in 2024-25 has been 6.38 percent more than the national average of 3.86 percent, which reflects the state’s dynamic business environment and increasing formalization of trade.
Gujarat’s GST revenue has increased to Rs 1,36,748 crore in 2024-25, which is Rs 11,579 crore more than last year. The state contributes 8.2 percent to the domestic GST pool of the country, which has included the top three GST contributing states in the country.
Additionally, the revenue from Gujarat’s State GST (SGST) and Integrated GST (IGST) reached Rs 73,200 crore, which is Rs 8,752 crore more than the previous financial year.
Gujarat recorded a 13.6 percent increase in SGST and IGST collections, which is more than 10.31 percent of the national average.
The state has acquired 88.9 percent compliance for GSTR-3B and 85.5 percent compliance for GSTR-1.
Gujarat also finished second at the national level with 71.69 points on GST KPI. Maharashtra is currently ahead from Gujarat.
By streamlining GST, the structure has simplified trade for millions of traders and industries and has increased transparency by reducing tax burden.
