Women Directors
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Wednesday that the presence of women directors in companies has more than tripled in the last 10 years. While in Tamil Nadu this number has more than quadrupled. Sitharaman said at a program that the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is encouraging the participation of women in various sectors. This is also visible from the amount allocated for schemes related to women empowerment in the budget. She said that today women are progressing rapidly in the corporate world.
Women are far ahead in startups and fintech
Women are far ahead in the startup and financial technology sector. About 18 percent of the 111 unicorns (startups with a valuation of more than one billion dollars) in the country are led by women. Sitharaman, who is also handling the responsibility of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, said this at a program of the Chennai unit of FICCI-FLO. She said that in August 2024, 8.83 lakh women directors were actively associated with working companies. This number is 3.4 times more than the 2.58 lakh women directors in the year 2014.
The number of women directors increased 4 times in Tamil Nadu
Sitharaman said that in Tamil Nadu, 15,550 women were included in the board of directors of companies in 2014. In August 2024, this number increased 4.3 times to 68,000. On budget allocation, she said that in the budget for the financial year 2013-14, the Center had made a provision of Rs 97,134 crore on schemes for the welfare and empowerment of women. In the budget for the financial year 2024-25, it has tripled to Rs 3.10 lakh crore.
