Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan reviewed various schemes with state agriculture ministers on Saturday. He sought their suggestions on ongoing programs and budget allocation before the Union Budget. According to a government statement, during a virtual meeting, Chouhan expressed satisfaction over the potential high growth rate of 3.5 to 4 percent of agriculture and allied sector in the financial year 2024-25 and urged the state governments to work at a faster pace. He welcomed the State Bank of India report, which shows that the rural poverty rate has declined from 7.2 percent in FY2023 to below five percent in FY2024 for the first time.

Government is also focusing on new agricultural methods

The minister said the Center is implementing a six-point strategy to boost the agriculture sector, which includes increasing per hectare production through research by ICAR and releasing new seed varieties. The government is also focusing on reducing production costs, promoting micro irrigation, agricultural mechanization, adoption of technology and new farming practices. Chouhan highlighted the progress in key schemes including PM-Kisan, Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, DAP Fertilizer Subsidy, Kisan Credit Card and Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay Sanrakshan Abhiyan (PMAASA).

Emphasis on development in agriculture sector

He said, “There is continuous progress in the agriculture sector and we all are continuously making efforts for it. I am confident that we will share suggestions regarding improvements in the budget, schemes and move forward together in that direction.” Agriculture Secretary Devesh Chaturvedi and other senior officials of the ministry were present in the meeting.
