New Delhi, June 17 (IANS) According to data released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare on Tuesday, the area of sowing of kharif crop has increased to 89.29 lakh hectares so far this year, compared to 87.81 lakh hectares in the same period last year.
In the early part of the season, an increase of 1.48 lakh hectare in the sowing sector is a good sign for more production, which will increase the income of farmers and also help in controlling food inflation.
According to official data, the area of rice, whose sowing has just started, has increased to 4.53 lakh hectares by June 13 this year, compared to 4 lakh hectares in the same period last year.
The area of sowing of pulses like urad and moong has increased to 3.07 lakh hectares, compared to 2.6 lakh hectares in the same period last year. This increase of 0.49 lakh hectares in early sowing of the season is a good start as an increase in production of pulses plays an important role in controlling inflation.
The area sown under oilseeds till June 13 this year has also increased from 1.5 lakh hectare to 2.05 lakh hectare as compared to the same period last year.
The area covered under coarse grains or millet like jowar, millet and ragi has so far touched the figure of 5.89 lakh hectares.
This season is the reason for increasing sowing in this season, it is better monsoon rains, making sowing easier in unirrigated areas of the country, which is about 50 percent of the country’s agricultural land.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved an increase in the minimum support price (MSP) of 14 kharif crops for the marketing session 2025-26 on May 28, ensuring profitable prices for their crops and encouraged production.
