New Delhi, 10 April (IANS). The Indian Textile Industry Confederation (CITI) said on Thursday that 90 -day relief in the US reciperock tariff is positive for Indian textile and apparel exporters who were facing high tariff barriers. The CITI urged the government to start the interim textile export protection scheme.
US President Donald Trump has announced a 90 -day ‘ban’ on reciperochl tariff except China.
During this period, in addition to the current fee, fees, tax, recovery or applicable fees, a much less recipe of 10 percent will be applicable.
CITI chairman Rakesh Mehra said, “Temporary relief will provide short -term relief to Indian textiles and apparel exporters, which were facing high tariff barriers. However, this is only a temporary measure. It is important that the Government of India boosts its connectivity with American counterparts to reach more sustainable and mutually beneficial solutions.”
Highlighting the importance of the US market, he said that America is the biggest destination for Indian textiles and apparel exports.
Mehra said, “The government is actively pushing bilateral talks for better tariff access, the industry urges the government to consider launching interim textile export protection scheme.”
He said that such measures would help reduce the effects of additional tariff costs, especially given very little margin of cloth and apparel exporters.
He further stated that the ongoing trade tension between the US and China offers a strategic opportunity for the country.
He insisted, “United States is trying to diversify its sourcing separate from China, so India has the ability to emerge as a reliable option.
However, this will require concrete efforts to achieve active diplomacy and more favorable and stable tariff arrangements.
According to the latest data, India exported textile and apparel products worth $ 10.5 billion to the US in 2024, which is about 28.5 percent of India’s total textile and apparel exports.
In the last five years, India has been a relatively favorite partner for the US in the region.
