New Delhi, 23 February (IANS). Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella admitted that one of his biggest mistakes was that he could not understand the dominance of the search engine on the Internet at the right time. Google took full advantage of the opportunity and developed it as its biggest business.
Nadella said that Microsoft initially thought that the web would always be decentralized, that is, different websites would work independently. But they could not understand that the search engine would become the most important business model of the web.
He described it as a big learning experience and said, “We missed the biggest business model on the web, because we had assumed that the web would be freely divided.”
In a conversation with YouTuber Dwarkesh Patel, Nadella said that Microsoft underestimated the importance of the search engine, while Google identified it at the right time and successfully implemented its strategy.
Nadella said, “Who could think that the search engine would become the biggest way to organize the web?”
He admitted that Microsoft could not understand it on time, while Google recognized it and implemented it in an excellent way. He also said that it is not enough to understand only technical changes, but it is also necessary to identify where the real benefit will be found.
Nadella also said that it is more difficult to change the methods of business, learning new technology.
He recalled many major technical changes in his career, such as travel from mainframe computer to personal computer and then development of client-server architecture.
He also discussed the emergence of the web and explained how Microsoft had to change his strategy after coming to a browser like Mosaic and Netscape.
Nadella, who joined Microsoft after working in Sun Microsystms in 1992, has seen many changes in the technical world.
He has an electrical engineering degree from Mangalore University, a master’s degree in Computer Science from University of Wisconsin-Milvauki and MBA from University of Chicago.
