On Friday, there was a tremendous impact of weather hit at Delhi Airport. More than 500 flights were delayed due to thunderstorms and strong winds, while three flights had to change the routes. An official said that two flights landing at Delhi Airport were diverted to Jaipur and one towards Ahmedabad in the morning. There was a strong storm in Delhi with heavy rains in the morning. According to PTI news, a house collapsed due to the storm, killing a woman and three of her children and the city was largely waterlogged.
Second highest rainfall in May since 1901
According to the news, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that this is the second highest rainfall in the national capital since 1901 in May 1901. According to data from flight tracking website flightradar24.com, more than 500 flights were delayed. Delhi International Airport Limited (Dial), who is the operator of the airport, said in a post at 5.20 am that some flights were affected due to bad weather. Dial said in a post on X at 7.25 am that the storm has passed, but the flight operations have been affected due to adverse weather conditions.

The airport operator issued several X posts during the day, stating about road barriers around the airport and passengers were advised to consider alternative transport options such as Delhi Metro to avoid delay. Dial said in a post at 8.55 pm on X that the airport is completely operational, although some flight operations may be affected due to weather conditions. In Delhi this morning, heavy rains and thunderstorms were crowded with air traffic. IndiGo said in a post on X at 2.49 pm that it has been affected and delayed.
Air India and SpiceJet also alerted
Air India of Tata Group also said that flight operations in some parts of North India have been affected due to adverse weather. The airline posted on X at 5.51 am-Some of our flights coming and going are being delayed or their route is being changed, which is likely to affect our overall flight schedule. We are doing our best to reduce the disruption. SpiceJet also said that due to bad weather, there is a huge crowd on ATC (air traffic control) in Delhi.
The airline said in a post on X at 10.09 am, all the departure/arrival and their resulting flights may be affected. Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is the largest and busy airport in the country, which handles the movement of around 1,300 flights per day.
