The annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) began with the awarding of the prestigious ‘Crystal Award’ to legendary footballer David Beckham and two others. Additionally, the inauguration ceremony highlighted the environmental crisis facing Antarctica through classical music and AI-generated ‘visuals’. Many Indian leaders have also reached this ski resort town to participate in this biggest meeting of top global leaders from the fields of government, business, civil society, education, art and culture etc. Borge Brende, President and CEO of the World Economic Forum (WEF), said the meeting comes at the most uncertain time in a generation, as new geo-economic, geopolitical and technological forces are reshaping our societies. . He said that the ongoing dynamic changes are posing significant challenges as well as significant opportunities, especially in relation to rapidly evolving technologies.
3000 leaders reached the meeting
Borge, in his welcome message to the nearly 3,000 leaders from around the world who have come to participate in the five-day meeting, which will run till January 24, said that the purpose of convening 3,000 leaders from public and private sectors around the world is to provide the necessary cooperation for these unique times. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav is leading the Indian delegation here, which includes a strong representation from the states. He said he would highlight India’s development model and the country’s vision for inclusive growth and digital transformation in Davos.

Earlier on Monday evening, ‘Crystal Awards’ were presented to star footballer David Beckham, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg and renowned architect Riken Yamamoto. According to the World Economic Forum, the ‘Crystal Award’ is given to people who have made significant contributions to advancing social, environmental and creative progress around the world. The awards ceremony was followed by an opening ceremony featuring a presentation on the theme of glacier conservation with classical music, electronic compositions and AI-generated visualizations. The United Nations has declared 2025 as the International Year of Glacier Conservation. The presentation highlighted the urgent environmental crisis facing Antarctica, where 91 percent of the world’s glaciers are located. Apart from business leaders and government leaders from around the world, this meeting is also attended by many eminent people from the fields of art, culture, entertainment and civil society every year.
