The Delhi government has planned to organize several shopping festivals in the city to promote retail and wholesale markets. It aims to make these places tourist destinations and generate employment to boost the economy. Manish Sisodia, who holds the responsibility of the Ministry of Finance along with the Ministry of Education, has made a provision of Rs 250 crore for the Delhi Shopping Festival and Delhi Wholesale Shopping Festival while presenting the budget for the financial year 2022-23 in the Vidhan Sabha on Saturday.
Sisodia said in the budget speech that Delhi’s products are considered reliable and durable and despite the city having many modern shopping malls, many people still shop from the traditional wholesale and retail markets. “Shopping in these traditional markets is part of our traditional culture and values. There are many famous markets in Delhi and we have planned to redevelop and modernize them to develop them into attractive tourist destinations and generate new jobs in the coming years.

Sisodia said that initially five markets have been selected for redevelopment and for this a provision of Rs 100 crore has been made in the budget. He said that this would create 1.5 lakh new jobs. He said that the shopping festivals will last for four-six weeks and shopkeepers will be given discounts in it. Apart from shopping, there will also be arrangements for catering and entertainment. He has also proposed in the budget to introduce a food truck policy to promote the local flavors of Delhi. Under this, food trucks serving traditional dishes of catering can be put on the streets of Delhi from 8 pm to late night.
