What is national mourning?
National mourning is declared on the death of a great leader or personality. Declaring national mourning does not mean holiday for government institutions. The Central Government has stated in a 1997 notification that there is no government holiday during national mourning. If a President or Prime Minister dies while in office, a government holiday is declared. However, the central or state governments can declare a holiday if they wish. In national mourning, the national flag at important government institutions is flown at half mast and government programs are not held.
Will banks remain closed?
Karnataka government has announced public holiday in schools, colleges and offices today. According to reports, government offices and banks are going to remain closed in Karnataka today. At the same time, today there is a bank holiday in Kohima region of Nagaland due to Christmas celebrations. Apart from this, there will be work in banks everywhere today.

Banks will remain closed on 28th December. Due to it being the fourth Saturday, banks will remain closed on this day. After this, there will be a weekly holiday for banks across the country on 29th December, Sunday. Banks will remain closed in Meghalaya on December 30 due to the death anniversary of freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah. At the same time, banks will remain closed in Mizoram and Sikkim on 31st December due to New Year’s Eve/Losong/Namsung.
