New Delhi, January 11 (IANS). Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra on Saturday said the key to achieving the goal of ‘developed India’ is ‘quality of work’ and not ‘quantity of work’. He spoke on the ongoing debate on working-hour balance initiated by the country’s top corporate leaders.
Speaking at the ‘Develop India Youth Leaders Dialogue 2025’ event in the national capital, Mahindra told a packed house that the debate was going in the wrong direction. The business leader quipped, “I respect Narayana Murthy and other corporate leaders a lot. I say that we should focus on the quality of work, not the quantity of work. So it is not about working 70 or 90 hours.”
Anand Mahindra further said that it depends on the work output and “you can change the world in 10 hours.” When asked how many hours he puts in at work, he said, “I don’t want it to be about time. I don’t want it to be about quantity. Ask me what the quality of my work is. Don’t ask me how many hours I work.”
According to him, his source of renewable energy is to “recharge his batteries by interacting with young people”. He said, “Today, I lived up to all my expectations, so my battery is fully charged.
The controversy over work-life balance started this week when L&T Chairman S.N. Subramanian suggested employees to work 90 hours a week including Sundays. After facing criticism, the company said the chairman’s comments reflected its larger ambition of nation building.

Meanwhile, the Department of Youth Affairs is organizing ‘Develop India Youth Leaders Dialogue’ at Bharat Mandapam on January 10-12. The event is a revamped version of the National Youth Festival, which aims to provide a unique platform to the youth to present innovative solutions for a ‘Developed India’.
