Odisha’s new excise policy allows musical performances and orchestras in licensed liquor shops. This information was given in an official release. It said, but no dance performance will be allowed in licensed liquor shops. The new excise policy will come into effect from September 1. The new policy release issued on Friday said, “Dance performances will not be allowed in any ‘on shop’ (where there is a provision for drinking alcohol sitting on the premises). However, such a shop can organize musical performances or orchestras within its licensed premises after obtaining the necessary permission under the Odisha Excise Rules, 2017.

You will not get ‘on shop’ license

The Odisha Excise Policy (excise duty, tax and margin structure as well as regulatory guidelines) will be implemented from September 1. The new policy also states that no new Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) ‘off shop’ (where customers can only buy liquor, there is no provision for sitting and drinking) will be approved in the state during the financial year 2024-25. The new excise policy also mentions that no new ‘on shop’ will be licensed for rural areas for the year 2024-25, although hotels and beer bars of three-star and above category will be allowed to sell beer.

The aim is to stop illegal liquor trade

The objective of the new policy is to prevent illegal liquor trade and create public awareness about liquor. The policy states that the 57 ‘on shop’ which have not been renewed in the current financial year will not be renewed.
