An official statement on Wednesday said that at least thirteen people died due to lightning in four districts of Bihar. According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), five people have died in Begusarai, four in Darbhanga, three in Madhubani and one in Samastipur. The statement said that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has expressed deep condolences on the death of 13 people and announced an ex-gratia amount of four lakh rupees to the families of the deceased. The Chief Minister has appealed to the people to be very cautious during the bad weather. CM said, “To protect yourself from electricity in the event of bad weather, follow the suggestions issued by the Disaster Management Department from time to time. Stay indoors during bad weather and be safe.” According to the Bihar Economic Survey (2024-25) report presented during the budget session of the state assembly in February, 275 deaths were recorded in the state in the year 2023 due to electricity or thunderstorms. The Bihar Meteorological Department has immediately issued a warning and put 70 blocks including the capital Patna on Yellow alert. According to the latest update, strong winds and lightning are expected to fall in these areas at a speed of 60 kilometers per hour in the next three hours. The IMD has issued a Yellow alert for many blocks of the state due to heavy rains, lightning and thunderstorms with strong winds and storms. The affected blocks include: Solar Bazaar, Murliganj, Madhepura, Seventycia, Ghailad, Sinhawar, Banmankhi, Kumarakhand, Bharagama, Shankarpur, Gamharia, Supaul, Triveniganj, Pipra, Maruna, Kishanpur, Ghogardiha, Pratapganj, Chhatapur, Raghopur, Sarayadh Bhapatia, Nirmali, Nirmali, Nirmali and Basadapur.
People living in these areas have been advised to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and stay indoors during the alert period.
