Today we have gathered here on the special occasion of Teachers’ Day. Happy Teachers’ Day to all of you. Every year, 5 September is celebrated as Teachers’ Day in India. This day is dedicated to India’s second President and first Vice President Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He was born on 5 September 1888 in Madras, Tamil Nadu. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was associated with the world of education before becoming the Vice President. He taught students for a long time in many prestigious colleges and universities. After becoming the President, when his fans and students wanted to celebrate his birthday with great pomp and show, he, being a teacher himself throughout his life, advised to celebrate this day as Teachers’ Day to honor teachers. After this, Teachers’ Day has been celebrated on 5 September in the country since 1962.
Friends, Teacher’s Day is the day to express respect and gratitude towards our teachers. Teachers remove the darkness of ignorance from our lives and fill it with the light of knowledge. Teachers do not just teach us, they also shape our future. They make us responsible citizens. They point out our mistakes so that we can constantly improve. Guru gives us the strength to fight all the difficulties that come at every new turn of life. They mold our personality like a potter.

On this day, we should also know about Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. Apart from being a politician, he was also a famous philosopher and educationist. He was a great supporter of education. He propagated Indian culture in India and abroad. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan taught philosophy at Presidency College, Madras. He also worked at Calcutta University. He held the position of Spalding Professor of Eastern Religion and Philosophy at Oxford University. Not only this, he was also the Vice Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University. He has also been awarded India’s highest honor, Bharat Ratna.
Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan used to say that students should be imaginative as well as healthy and self-confident. He used to say that reading books gives us the habit of thinking in solitude and true happiness. Books are the means through which we can build bridges between different cultures.
