The Delhi University school, established in the year of independence, will now be up to Intermediate. The school management is going to apply for this to the Central Board of Secondary Education. This school, established in 1947, was made for the students of DU teachers and employees working here, but gradually children from nearby areas also started taking admission in it. Till 2002, this school was run under the Delhi Government, but in 2003, this school expanded and it was recognized by the CBSE board and was extended up to 10th. Now preparations are underway to extend this school up to 12th from the same board.
The manager of this school, Dr. Prabhanshu Ojha, says that the university administration is committed to develop this school and run classes till 12th standard. This is the reason why the school campus building is being constructed by arranging funds for this. Classes of 11th standard are likely to start here in the next session. This school has a glorious history of its own. With the joint efforts of all of us, this school is focusing on the holistic development of students along with quality education. This school of DU would not have been able to progress without the efforts of the DU Vice Chancellor. He not only gave financial aid for this but also always stood in the role of a mentor.
The school’s principal Dr. Garima Bharti says that the name of this school located in Morris Nagar is Delhi University Social Center School. The construction work here will be completed soon. We are going to apply for recognition from CBSE up to 12th standard. Many people who studied in this school are today engaged in jobs and business in India and abroad.
The name of its founder is not in the school records
Delhi University Social School was started in 1947 by the wife of St. Stephen’s College Principal Prof. David Rajaram and other women from Morris Nagar area. The Vice Chancellor of DU at that time was Sir Morris Gwyer. However, the name of Prof. David Rajaram’s wife is nowhere to be found in the school records. The school’s principal Dr. Garima Bharti says that we tried a lot but could not find the name of Prof. David’s wife.
The annual report of the school tells that this was the same time when on one hand the trumpet of India’s independence was being blown all over the world and on the other hand in the Morris Nagar area of Delhi, the seeds of a new wave of education, new enthusiasm and new direction were being sown by the women of this area. In the early days (1947), the women of Morris Nagar area, living up to the spirit of ‘Seva Param Dharma’, started teaching the children of class IV employees in the barracks (Sainik Niwas) located in the Kala Sankal of Delhi University. In 1964, the school was registered by the Delhi Municipal Corporation up to class V and in 1967 the school was upgraded up to class VIII. In 1970, the school was recognized as a secondary school by the Directorate of Education and along with this, it also received 95 percent aid grant. The then Vice Chancellor was Dr. Swaroop Singh. In 1989, the school received the present building as grant. In the year 2003, the 9th and 10th classes run by the school were recognized by the Directorate of Education (without grants-in-aid) and affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education. The school currently has 500 students. But there are plans to increase the number to 3000.
