A big news has come out from Maharashtra. The Maharashtra cabinet on Tuesday approved the introduction of electric-bike taxi for cities with a population of at least one lakh. This step will benefit single passengers traveling up to 15 kilometers and it will be applicable in many other urban centers in the state besides Mumbai. State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said that the move will create more than 10,000 jobs in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and the same in the rest of the state. He told reporters that the e-bike with roof for proper division and monsoon will be allowed to be taken to the people.
Sarnaq made this announcement after a weekly meeting of the cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at Sahyadri Guest House. It approved the proposal to introduce electric-bike taxis in major urban areas. He said that the cabinet has approved the policy to introduce only e-bike taxis. A revenue model is being finalized and will be announced soon. The minister insisted that the safety and affordable fare of the passengers would be a priority. The ‘bike taxi’ usually refers to a ride-service that uses motorcycles or other two-wheelers to carry passengers.
’10, 000 rupees will be assisted’
Pratap Sarnaik said, “Children of auto-rickshaws and taxi drivers associated with the government-certified corporations and board drivers can apply for e-bike taxi. They will be given assistance of Rs 10,000, and they can raise the remaining amount through loans.” The minister said, “This is the first step towards pollution-free Maharashtra. We will decide the fare. If a passenger has to spend Rs 100 for the journey, we will work on how this work can be done for Rs 30-40.” (Input-PTI)
