Respected Principal Sir, all the teachers and my friends, my greetings to all of you.
Today we all have gathered here on the occasion of Teachers’ Day. Many best wishes to all of you on Teachers’ Day. Teachers are the pillars and guides of our lives. They give their time to beautify our lives and take them forward. Just as a potter carves clay to create artwork, teachers bring out the best in us children, groom us. Teachers not only educate us but they always try to make us good human beings. Their words enhance our lives. Friends, on this day we should remember Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and salute him, whose birth anniversary is celebrated on 5 September as Teachers’ Day. 5 September, Teachers’ Day, is dedicated to him. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was the first Vice President of the country and a great educationist, the carrier of Indian culture, a renowned educationist and a great philosopher.
Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan himself was a very good teacher. Born on 5 September 1888 in a small village Tirumani in Tamil Nadu, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was nominated for the Nobel Prize 27 times. In 1954, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna.
Now let me tell you about the incident because of which his birthday was chosen as Teacher’s Day. Once his students respectfully asked him if they could give him a gift on his birthday and celebrate his birthday. On this Dr. Radhakrishnan refused to accept the gift from the students and said that they can celebrate this day as Teacher’s Day. When he later passed away, it was decided to celebrate Teacher’s Day on his birthday, September 5, to pay tribute and respect to him.
Teachers build our society. They are our guides. The status of a teacher is higher than that of a parent. Parents give birth to a child but a teacher shapes his character and lays the foundation for a bright future. Therefore, no matter how old we grow, we should never forget our teachers.
Believe me, we will always remember the things taught by our teachers at every difficult and good turn of our lives. Just like a potter gives direction to a clay pot, teachers shape our lives in the same way.
Teachers are our source of inspiration who always motivate us to move forward.
