Respected Principal Sir/Teachers and my dear classmates. Happy Teachers’ Day to all of you. Today I am very happy that I have got the opportunity to express some of my thoughts on the auspicious occasion of Teachers’ Day. We know that today we all have gathered here to celebrate Teachers’ Day. Friends, today is the day to salute these Gurus who remove the darkness of ignorance from our lives and fill it with the light of knowledge. This day is not only limited to students expressing their gratitude to their teachers in schools and colleges, but working professionals also make their Gurus feel special on this day from whom they learned a lot in life, helped them move forward in their career and who shaped their future.
Teachers not only teach us, they also shape our future. They make us responsible citizens. They point out our mistakes so that we can constantly improve. Guru gives us the strength to fight all the difficulties that come at every new turn of life.
Now I will tell you why Teachers’ Day is celebrated on 5 September. Actually, this is the birthday of former President Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. This day is dedicated to him. The country’s first Vice-President Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was a famous philosopher and educationist. He was born on 5 September 1888 in Tirumani village of Tamil Nadu. He was a great supporter of education. Once some of Radhakrishnan’s disciples thought of celebrating his birthday together. When they went to seek permission from him regarding this, Radhakrishnan said that instead of celebrating my birthday separately, I will be proud if it is celebrated as Teachers’ Day. After this, it was decided to celebrate 5 September as Teachers’ Day.
On this day, we should also remember the thoughts of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and implement them in life. He used to say that reading books gives us the habit of thinking in solitude and true happiness. Books are the means through which we can build bridges between different cultures. He had said that a student should be imaginative as well as healthy and self-confident. This paves the way for him to reach his goal.
Dear friends, a teacher shapes the personality of a child like a potter. The role of a teacher is very important in the life of a student. On this day, Teachers’ Honor Ceremonies are organized at many places. Teachers are honored for their great work and achievements. The Central Government and State Governments honor school and college teachers. This honor is given to teachers for teaching in an innovative way in their respective schools, for developing creativity and the power of thinking and understanding in children in an innovative way.
In the end, I wish that my teachers continue to guide me like this throughout my life so that I never stray from the path of progress. I would like to end my speech with a couplet.
Consider your teacher as Paras, consider yourself as iron,
