Dr. John Mathai practiced law in the Madras High Court from 1910 AD for the next eight years. Then he remained Professor of Economics in Madras Presidency College for 5 years. In 1925, John Mathai was elected member of the Madras Legislative Council. After being a member of the Indian Tariff Board, he was made the Director General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics. Dr. Mathai retired from this post in 1940. After this his field of work developed further. He became the director of ‘Tatasons Limited’. Then he became Transport Minister and Finance Minister in the Central Government. You did not remain on the post of Finance Minister for long. He resigned from there and went back to the post of director of Tatasons. Dr. Mathai was the Chairman of State Bank of India in 1955-56.
