The released draft states that those having PG degree in Master of Engineering (ME) and Master of Technology (MTech) with minimum 55 percent marks will be allowed direct recruitment to the post of Assistant Professor. For this they will have to pass the University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test.
The new norms framed by the UGC are also set to allow candidates to teach based on their highest academic expertise. According to this, now UG and PG study in any subject but can apply for the post of professor in PhD or NET subject. For example, a candidate with a PhD in Chemistry, a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and a Master’s degree in Physics is now eligible to teach Chemistry. Similarly, candidates who qualify their first National Eligibility Test in any subject other than UG, PG can pursue the subject in which they have qualified for NET.
According to the new guidelines, now it will not be necessary for a candidate to have 10 years of teaching experience for appointment to the post of Vice-Chancellor. Field experts, who have worked for 10 years in the relevant field and have a good track record, will be eligible for the post, whereas till now 10 years of tenure as an academician was required.
UGC has prepared a draft to give relaxation in NET subjects also. This means that even if the subject of NET exam is different from UG and PG, those who have qualified the NET exam from the respective subjects can still apply for the post of Professor of that subject. The draft prepared by the UGC states that, if the candidates have any PhD subject other than UG and PG subjects, then they can become professors from the PhD subjects. For this, related subjects will not be mandatory in UG and PG.
