The one who imparts knowledge is a Guru, it is not necessary that he teaches in a college or school. Only dedication is needed for study and teaching. On the occasion of Teacher’s Day, we have brought the story of some such Gurus, who may not be teachers by profession but have lit the flame of education. Here know the story of some such people-
Rajesh Sharma has been running a free school for working class children under the flyover near Yamuna Bank Metro for a decade and a half. There is a smile on the faces of the children and satisfaction in the minds of the parents. The children who have come out from here are working in various fields.
Rajesh says that my studies were left incomplete due to lack of funds and I came to Delhi from Hathras in 1988. I sold vegetables here, opened a grocery shop but it did not work out. In 2008, I left everything and started a school for the children of labourers. Today, there are 160 children in it. I have two more friends with me. Its name is Free School. Those who do not get education can study here.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had mentioned this school in the 39th episode of Mann Ki Baat.
Nursing officers are lighting the lamp of education in slums
AIIMS nursing officer Amit Kumar has taken up the task of educating children for whom education is a dream. Amit started by teaching slum children for free, later laid the foundation of ‘Join Together Trust’ in 2016. His friends associated with the trust provide free education to 500 children daily at eight places as volunteers. This trust has made more than 2000 children literate so far. 500 have been enrolled in school.
Than Singh’s school is bringing about change
Head constable Than Singh posted at Lal Qila police post, besides performing law and order duties, also teaches the children of labourers living nearby. The school running in Lal Qila premises since 2014 is known by the people as Than Singh’s Pathshaala. Seeing that the children of labourers were unable to go to school, Than Singh started arranging for their education at his own level. He also got a lot of support from senior police officers in this work.
