English Diwas Speech 2024: Every year 14th September is celebrated as English Diwas in India. This day is a day of pride for every Indian. 14th September is dedicated to English, the language that connects the whole of India. This day is celebrated to honor and promote English. English reflects the specialty of our country, unity in diversity. English language gives a distinct identity to India even abroad and binds us Indians who speak different languages in the country in the thread of uniformity. English is the language of the masses and most Indians use it to express their feelings. English is spoken not only in India but in many countries around the world. After English and Mandarin, English is the third most spoken language in the world. This is the reason why English is given immense respect all over the world today. On English Diwas, many programs are organized in schools, colleges and government offices. Competitions like poetry recitation, essay, speech, debate etc. are organized in schools and colleges.

Today we all have gathered here on the occasion of English Diwas. Today is the day to understand the significance and importance of the English language and to know the challenges of its future. English language is a beautiful medium to express our feelings. English Diwas is celebrated every year on 14th September in the country. English was declared the official language on 14th September 1949, two years after independence. After this, to promote English, on the advice of Rashtriya Bhasha Prachar Samiti, from 1953 onwards, 14th September was celebrated as English Diwas every year all over India. English Diwas was celebrated for the first time in the country on 14th September, 1953.
English Diwas has a very special significance for every Indian citizen. India is a country full of diversity. People of different religions and castes live here. People speaking different languages, dialects, having different attire, food habits and culture live here. It is the English language that binds all the people of the country in the thread of unity. English has a huge contribution in keeping the country united. Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi had called English the language of the masses. English has given us recognition all over the world. In today’s time, people are busy in adopting English language in every part of their life, but it is also true that English language has its own importance.
Friends, even after nearly 8 decades of independence, the wish of freedom fighters to make English the national language remains unfulfilled. English has only become the official language of the country. Today, people who understand and speak English live in every state of the country. Even in non-English speaking states, people know makeshift English. Even though English is not officially the national language of the country, it is only the official language, but practically it is the ubiquitous language of this country. In such a situation, there is a need to unite today to give English its due rights. Friends, English, which binds the country in the thread of unity, is not just a language but an expression of emotions.
On this special occasion, we all have to understand our responsibility towards the English language. We should not only feel proud in speaking and writing this language but also contribute in promoting and propagating it. It is our cultural responsibility to respect and protect the English language. On this auspicious occasion of English Diwas, we all should take a pledge that we will cooperate in the prosperity and development of the English language and will pass it on to the coming generations with pride. Let us all together use it as much as possible in our spoken language.
