Speech On Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanti: Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanti

Respected guests and my dear friends,

Today, October 2, is the birth anniversary of that great man on whose one voice millions of Indians had given up one meal. Whose determined nature, honesty, simplicity and discipline inspire millions of Indians even today. Today, along with Gandhiji, the country is also celebrating the birth anniversary of India’s second Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.

Lal Bahadur Shastri, who was jailed several times during the freedom struggle, made an important contribution in the building of a new India. Shastri ji, who was small in height, had tremendous inner strength. Shastri ji was a Gandhian leader with efficient leadership and lived a simple life. Shastri ji lived the ideas of Gandhiji even after being at the top of power. His efficiency was excellent.

Riji never compromised with the security and sovereignty of the country and his determined personality was seen in the 1965 war. To teach Pakistan a lesson, he even gave the army free rein to give a befitting reply and our army defeated the Pakistani army badly. After the war with Pakistan in 1965, there was a severe drought in the country. To overcome these circumstances, Shastri ji requested the countrymen to observe a fast for one day. And during this he gave the slogan of ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’.

Before becoming the Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri was the Railway Minister, Transport and Communications Minister, Commerce and Industry Minister, Home Minister and during Nehru ji’s illness, he was a minister without portfolio. He resigned from the post of Railway Minister, holding himself responsible for a railway accident in which several people were killed. The country and the Parliament had greatly appreciated his unprecedented initiative. This example is given even today.

During the food crisis in the country, Lal Bahadur Shastri had stopped taking his salary. He promoted White Revolution, a national campaign to increase milk production. He also promoted the Green Revolution to increase food production in India.

If we talk about his childhood and education, he was born on 2 October 1904 in Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh. Being the youngest, his family used to call him Nanhe. He did his graduation from Kashi Vidya Peeth. It is said that he used to swim the river to go to school every day. At the age of 16, he left his studies and joined Gandhiji’s non-cooperation movement.

Friends, Shastri ji used to say that for the progress of the country, we will have to fight poverty, disease and ignorance instead of fighting among ourselves. Today is the day to adopt his thoughts and take a pledge to implement them in your actions.

Thank you. Jai Hind. Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan.
