Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship-
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) of the Japanese government has been inviting international students to study in Japan at state expense since 1954. These are the seven types of Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarships-
1. Research Student- Candidate should be a college graduate and his age should be less than 35 years.
2. Teacher Training Students- Candidate age should be less than 35 years and should be graduate in college or teacher training.
3. Undergraduate Students- Candidate’s age should be between 17 to 25 years. Candidate must have completed 12 years of schooling or have completed courses in a school higher than high school.
4. Japanese Studies Students- Candidate’s age should be between 18 to 30 years. They must be enrolled as graduate students in Japanese language or Japanese culture major faculties or schools at a university outside Japan when they come to Japan and must be enrolled at a home institution when they return to their home countries.
5. College of Technology Students- Candidate’s age should be between 17 to 25 years and they should have completed their high school education.
6. Specialized Training College Students- Candidate’s age should be between 17 to 25 years. Candidate must have received 12 years of schooling or completed school education equivalent to Japanese high school.
7. Young Leaders Program (YLP) Students – Candidates should be below 40 years of age and University or College graduates with practical work experience, Young Public Administrator etc. Who are expected to play an active role in Asia and other countries.
Students can apply for this scholarship in two ways, first apply to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) with a recommendation from the Japanese Embassy or other Japanese diplomatic mission in your country, or you can apply to a Japanese university. Apply for MEXT with a recommendation.
Japan Student Service Organization (JASSO) Scholarship-
“Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students” is offered by JESSO.
The program provides scholarships for preparatory courses for admission to universities, graduate schools, junior colleges, colleges of technology, professional training colleges and educational institutions, and Japanese universities, as well as for admission to Japanese language institutes in Japan.
Local Government/Local International Association/Private Foundation Scholarship-
Students can also get scholarships through local governments and local international associations in Japan as they offer scholarships to students living in their district as well as students attending schools in their district.
On-Campus Scholarship and Tuition Fee Waiver/Reduction System-
