Ratan Tata, Honorary Chairman (Emeritus Chairman) of Tata Sons passed away late on Wednesday night. The entire country is in mourning due to his demise. Ratan Tata was one of the country’s most influential businessmen, leaving behind a legacy that has significantly shaped Indian industry. His mortal remains have been kept at the NCPA for darshan from 10 am. After this, Ratan Tata’s funeral will begin at Worli crematorium at 3.30 pm.
Parents were separated in childhood
Tributes are being paid to Ratan Tata from across the country and abroad. In such a situation, let us take a look at his career and achievements. Ratan Tata was born in Mumbai to Sunu Commissariat and Naval Tata (Parsi family). When Ratan Tata was 10 years old, his parents separated. After this, he was adopted by his grandmother Nawazbai Tata from J.N.Petit Parsi Orphanage. He was then brought up with his half-brother Noel Tata (son of Naval Tata and Simon Tata).
A look at Ratan Tata’s education and career:
Ratan Tata’s early education was from Campion School, Cathedral, Mumbai and Bishop Cotton School, John Connon School, Shimla. Then in 1955, Ratan Tata went to America to study architecture and engineering at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. In the year 1962, Tata received the degree of Bachelor of Architecture (BArch). After returning, Ratan joined the Tata Group in 1962 as an assistant in Tata Industries. The same year, he underwent 6-month training at the Jamshedpur plant of the Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (now Tata Motors). Then in the year 1963, he joined the training program of Tata Iron and Steel Company or TISCO (now Tata Steel) based in Jamshedpur. Two years later, he was appointed as a Technical Officer in the engineering division of TISCO. After this he went to Australia for 2 years as Resident Representative of Tata Group. After this, in the year 1970, Ratan Tata returned to his native India and joined Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) for some time. In 1971, he became the direct in-charge of National Radio and Electronics (NELCO) and began his first independent leadership mission. He joined the board of Tata Sons in 1974 and completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in 1975. After this, in the year 1981, he was made the chairman of Tata Industries. He was the Chairman of Air India between 1986 and 1989. On 21 March 1991, he took over as Chairman of Tata Sons and Tata Trusts from JRD Tata. Under his leadership, the Tata Group expanded globally and acquired many big companies, including big names like Tetley, Corus, Jaguar Land Rover, Brunner Mond, General Chemical Industrial Products and Daewoo. The Government of India honored Ratan Tata with the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second highest civilian award, in 2008. After this, in December 2012, he resigned from the post of Chairman of Tata Sons and was appointed Honorary Chairman (Emeritus Chairman) of Tata Sons.
