The initial automotive test of the Indian light tank ‘Joravaar’ has been conducted in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. The first phase of the developmental field firing trial of the Indian light tank was successful. The field trial has successfully met the desired objectives in the desert areas. During the test, the tank hit the target with the expected accuracy. This test was successfully conducted by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) on Friday.
Military sources said that due to its light weight, Zorawar can move very fast in hilly areas. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has praised DRDO, Indian Army and all the associate partners for the successful trials of the Indian light tank. The firing performance of the tank was rigorously evaluated in the initial phase and it achieved the required accuracy on the given targets. The Zorawar tank has been successfully developed by the Combat Vehicle Research and Development Establishment, a unit of the Defence Research and Development Organisation, in collaboration with Larsen & Toubro Limited.

Sources said that the unique thing about Zoravar is that it weighs 25 tonnes. Also, Zoravar fulfills the basics of a tank. It has power, speed and safety. All parameters are being met in Zoravar. After being handed over to the army, these 25-tonne tanks will be transported to the deployment sites through the Indian Air Force’s C-17 Globe Master. 2 tanks can be transported at a time. Being lightweight, Zoravar can move very fast in hilly areas. Currently, T-72, T-90 tanks are deployed in hilly areas, which will be replaced by Zoravar. If military sources are to be believed, this light weight Zoravar tank will be deployed in high altitude areas like Ladakh.
Learning from the Russia-Ukraine war, loitering munition USV has been added to the tank. Zorawar has been designed to counter China’s light weight tank ZTQ Type-15. China has deployed ZTQ Type-15 tanks after the clash with the Indian Army in the Galvan Valley. The Indian Army has deployed 200 T-72 tanks.
However, these tanks are heavier than Zorawar. In less than two and a half years, the 25-tonne light tank Zorawar was designed and its first prototype was also made and tested. Zorawar is expected to be inducted into the Indian Army by 2027 after all the tests.
