The results of the assembly elections held in Haryana have come. The review phase of these results is also going on. In this context, according to the analysis of Association for Democratic Reforms, ADR, 96 percent i.e. 86 MLAs in the newly elected 90-member Haryana Assembly are crorepatis. And 13 percent i.e. 12 have serious criminal cases registered against them. Analysis of affidavits of all 90 candidates shortlisted by ADR and Haryana Election Watch shows that the number of crorepati MLAs has increased this time. The number of crorepati candidates has increased from 93 percent in 2019 to 96 percent this time. Talking about the last elections, a total of 30 MLAs have been re-elected in 2024. Their average wealth has now increased by 59 percent from 2019 to Rs 14.46 crore.
If we look at the party-wise numbers, 96 per cent of BJP MLAs, 95 per cent of Congress MLAs and each of the INLD and Independent winners have declared assets worth more than Rs 1 crore. According to the data, out of 90 MLAs, about 44 percent have assets worth more than Rs 10 crore, while only 2.2 percent have assets worth less than Rs 20 lakh. The average wealth of the winning candidate is around Rs 24.97 crore which is significantly higher than Rs 18.29 crore in 2019. Independent MLA from Hisar Savitri Jindal tops the list with assets worth over Rs 270 crore. After this, BJP’s Shakti Rani Sharma and Shruti Chaudhary are at second place with assets worth Rs 145 crore and Rs 134 crore respectively.
Of the winning candidates, 12 have serious criminal records, of which six are facing serious charges and one is facing charges of attempt to murder. Seven candidates had serious criminal cases against them in 2019. Party wise, 19 percent Congress MLAs, 6 percent BJP MLAs and 67 percent independent winners have declared criminal cases against themselves.
The analysis also revealed that 28 winning candidates have declared liabilities of Rs 1 crore or more. Rajbir Fartia of Congress from Loharu is at the top with Rs 44 crore. Yafaratiya also tops the list of highest earners having declared an income of Rs 10.75 crore in his income tax return for 2023-24. Talking about educational qualification, 68 percent of the winning candidates are graduates or have higher degrees. There are 14 percent women MLAs in the new House. In 2019 this figure was 10 percent. Whereas 66 percent MLAs are in the age group of 51 to 80 years.
