New Delhi. Modi government was receiving complaints about obscenity and lewd content on all OTT platforms for a long time. Now the government has conducted surgical strike on 18 OTT platforms spreading obscenity. Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L. Murugan informed the Lok Sabha on Wednesday that the Central Government has blocked 18 OTT platforms spreading obscenity through content. All these 18 OTT platforms have been blocked on 14 March 2024. The Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting said that all digital media including news channels ‘Bolta Hindustan’ and ‘National Dastak’ on YouTube and publications of current affairs are covered under the IT Law 2021. He said that under Section 69A of the IT Act 2000, the Central Government has the right to give instructions to block any content.

Murugan told the Lok Sabha that under the IT Rules, the Government of India cannot take any action to protect the sovereignty of the country, integrity of the state, friendly relations with other countries, maintain public order or prevent incitement to commit any cognizable offence. None of their content can be shown in India. Actually, there is no provision for any kind of censoring of content for OTT platforms. There has been a lot of abuse and other obscene dialogues in the content of all OTTs. In this matter, people have been continuously requesting the Central Government on social media to take action against the OTT platforms that spread obscenity and obscenity in the society.
