Shyam Benegal was born on December 14, 1934 in Hyderabad. He belonged to the family of famous artist and director Guru Dutt. Guru Dutt’s maternal grandmother and Shyam Benegal’s grandmother were real sisters, hence they were Guru Dutt’s cousins. Shyam Benegal was fond of films since childhood. His father Sridhar Benegal was a famous photographer of Karnataka. Under his influence, Shyam made his first film with his father’s camera at the age of 12.
