New Delhi: Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra, who won critical and commercial praise for ’12th Fail’, says Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh Khan was his first choice for his period film ‘1942: A Love Story’. Many changes were made regarding the cast in this Anil Kapoor and Manisha Koirala starrer film. Aamir Khan had also revealed that he too was offered this role. But, he rejected it because he did not like the script.
This film is from the time when Shahrukh was not as big a star as he is today. Speaking at the Kellogg School of Management, Vidhu said, ‘I had seen his work when I was making ‘1942: A Love Story’. Renu had edited a film named ‘Maya Memsaab’. He had a small role. I offered him this role. I was the first person to offer him the role. He was not a star then.
Interestingly, Shahrukh was also to do ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’, which was Rajkumar Hirani’s directorial debut. However, Shahrukh had to withdraw from the film due to back surgery. After all, the two worked together in the immigration drama ‘Dinky’ released last year, which clashed with the box-office release of Prabhas and Prithviraj Sukumaran starrer ‘Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire’.
