Baldev Raj Chopra was born on 22 April 1914 in Rahon in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district of Punjab. BR’s father Vilayati Raj Chopra was an employee in the Public Works Department. BR Chopra studied Punjab University in Lahore and MA in English literature. Got the degree. His first job was as a film journalist for Cine Herald, a film-masik magazine, originating from Lahore in 1944. Later, in 1947, he released his first film ‘Chandni Chowk’, which IS. Johar wrote and starred Naeem Hashmi and Erica Rukhshi. To make a career in the cinema world, BR moved to Mumbai. BR Chopra was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2001, the third largest civilian award of the Republic of India. He has received 3 National Film Awards. In 1960, he won the Certificate of Merit for the Best Feature Film in Hindi for his film ‘Law’. In 1961, he received the President’s silver medal for the best feature film in Hindi as a producer for the film ‘Dharmaputra’. In 1998, he won the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his contribution to Indian cinema. He has two Filmfare Awards – Filmfare Best Director Award for the film ‘Law’ in 1962 and Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema in 2003. In 1998, he received the Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement in Bollywood and in 2008, he received the Phalke Ratna Award by Dadasaheb Phalke Academy.
