Even though the court has given recognition to homosexual relationships in the country, but still their attitude and thinking towards the society has not changed yet. For this reason, people of the LGBTQ community have to face many problems in the society, although Hindi cinema has always been raising these issues through its films. Although it is mostly seen that films made on out-of-the-box subjects get less audience, but there were many such films which tried to change society’s attitude towards homosexual relations and transgenders and were also hits. Fire-1996
Deepa Mehta’s film Fire came in the year 1996. Perhaps this would have been the first Bollywood film in which the issue of homosexuality was raised in the mainstream. Made in the 90s, the film starred Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das. At that time, the mindset of people regarding such issues was even more rooted and this was the reason that this film, which depicted lesbian relationships, faced a lot of criticism.
Darmiyan-1997Darmiyan, directed by Kalpana Lajimi, featured Kirron Kher and Arif Zakaria in the lead roles. In this film, the pain of transgender and his struggle in the society was shown very well. The film was based on the life of the actress and her transgender son. The film Darmiyan, which showed the issues of transgender, was released in the year 1997.
Tamanna-1997
Directed by Mahesh Bhatt, Tamannaah originally depicted the negative aspect of society towards third gender. In this film, veteran actor Paresh Ravan played the character of a transgender who brings up a girl child (Pooja Bhatt). This film, which came in the year 1997, also got the National Award.
Aligarh 2016-
Hansal Mehta’s film ‘Aligarh’ was a film based on a true incident. The film depicted the story of Professor Ramchandra Sirsa of Aligarh Muslim University, who was a gay. This movie shows the issues of gay relationship. The film depicts how one’s life is negatively affected by being conservative. This film of Manoj Bajpayee, which came in the year 2016, had made a lot of headlines.
