Grandmother was scared when Alia and Shaheen were given Muslim names, Mahesh Bhatt told what his mother was worried about

New Delhi. Famous filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt does not hesitate to talk about his personal life. Years ago, he talked about the religion of his parents. His father was a Gujarati Brahmin and mother Shirin Mohammad Ali was a Muslim. Mahesh Bhatt told how his mother used to get a little embarrassed when he talked about his Muslim roots. The director also revealed that his mother was worried when he gave Muslim names to his daughters Alia and Shaheen.

In 1998, Mahesh Bhatt said during an interview with Rediff, ‘I have enjoyed the best of two worlds. My mother was a Shia Muslim, while my father was a person who wore the sacred thread. They never pretended to be secular. The interesting thing is that both (father and mother) maintained their personal faith in their respective religions. Both loved each other very much, but neither of them forced the other to do anything in their own way.’
