Recalling his blockbuster film ‘Wall’ released 50 years ago with Salim Khan, lyricist-script writer Javed Akhtar said how fast and quietly passes.
At one time, the pair of Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar were known as ‘Salim-Javed’. The pair gave Hindi cinema some of the biggest hit films, but Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor starrer ‘Wall’ is a special place. In August the same year, the pair gave another blockbuster film ‘Sholay’.
Lyricist Javed Akhtar, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday, wrote on ‘X’, “The wall was released on 21 January 1975. Exactly fifty years ago. How fast and quietly passes. It always happens, but it is a surprise. ”
Starring Nirupa Roy, Neetu Singh and Parveen Bobby, the film has been in the consciousness of people for decades and its dialogues “I have mother” and “Davar saheb, I still do not raise money even today” is still remembered today.
The story of ‘Wall’ revolves around the two poor brothers living in the slums of Mumbai. When they grow up, elder brother Vijay (Bachchan) goes into the world of crime while younger brother Ravi (Kapoor) becomes an honest police officer.
In the prime video documentary series ‘Angry Young Man’ released last year, Akhtar said that he had to work hard to think about what the climax of the film should be.
Akhtar said, “People say that the script of ‘wall’ is perfect. We wrote it in detail in 18 days with a short story. Then I wrote dialogues in about 20 days. ”
Salim Khan said, “But still could not work on the ‘end’. Once the script was completed, we came to know that we have not been able to reach the climax. So Javed and I completed it by sitting at my Bandra house. Then we went directly to Yash Chopra’s house and narrated it. “He recalled in the documentary series,” There was a complete silence for about five minutes. “
Salim-Javed also wrote the story of ‘Angry Young Man’ with Amitabh Bachchan’s victory in 1973 ‘Zanjeer’. The film historians and analysts say that the pair used to put their finger at the pulse of the country and make films that reflect the deep disappointment among the people.
However, Akhtar said in the documentary that he was unaware of all this while writing the script of ‘Wall’. He said, “nor we thought that our stories have socio-political relevance. And it’s good. I am very happy that we were innocent about it. Because we were part of the same society, the same world and we were breathing in the same air. ,
He said in ‘Angry Young Man’, “Unknowingly, we were keeping pace with the rest of the people. But is it really coincidental that in 1973, we created an cautious person (victory from ‘chain’) and in 1975, India faced Emergency? Do they have a relationship or not? ”
In the documentary series, Amitabh Bachchan described the scene of the temple in the Premier Night of ‘Wall’ in which his character Vijay grows up and becomes an atheist, but prays to him by chanting God for his sick mother. His initial line is: “Today you will be happy.”
Bachchan said, “I remember the premiere of” Wall “, the audience was a little laughing, it was very unexpected and he felt that it was some kind of joke.” But only a few seconds after that, they just stunned. ”
For many years, the script of ‘Wall’ was taught as a great script in Pune’s ‘Film and Television Institute of India’. In 1976, Salim -Javed won all Filmfare Awards in the Writing categories – Best Story, Best Dialogue and Best Screenplay – for ‘Wall’.
