‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack’ released on 29 August
The recently released web series ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack’ on Netflix has been surrounded by controversies since its release. There is a constant demand to ban the show and now the troubles of the web show seem to be increasing. A PIL has been filed in the Delhi High Court on Monday (September 3) demanding a ban on this show. The petition states that the facts about the real identity of the hijackers have been distorted in the web series. According to this petition, the names of the hijackers in the web series have been shown as ‘Bhola’ and ‘Shankar’, which has hurt the sentiments of the Hindu community.
Dispute over change of name in IC 814 reaches Delhi High Court
This petition has been filed by Hindu Sena president and farmer Surjeet Singh Yadav. It demands the Centre and Maharashtra government to cancel the certificate of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and direct them to ban the series. According to the petition, by distorting important facts about the real identity of the kidnappers in the web series, not only historical events have been misrepresented but misinformation is also being spread.
What is the truth?
However, it seems that the controversy over the changed names is unnecessary. In the official statement of the Union Home Minister on 6 January 2000, it is clearly stated that the hijackers of IC 814 were Doctor, Burger, Bhola and Shankar for the purpose of concealing their identity. Film critic and YouTuber, Anmol Jamwal also shared the official statement on his X account and called the demand for a ban on the series unfortunate.
The central government has summoned the head of Netflix India
At the same time, the central government also seems to be serious about the controversy surrounding this web series. According to official sources, the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued a summon to the content head of the OTT platform Netflix on Tuesday. It is being told that clarification has been sought from him on the alleged controversial aspects of the series.
When was IC 814 hijacked?
The series directed by Anubhav Sinha was released on Netflix on 29 August. Actors like Vijay Verma, Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapoor, Manoj Pahwa, Dia Mirza, Patralekha and Arvind Swami have worked in it. This series is based on the true incident of hijacking of Indian Airlines plane Ice 814 in 1999.
