Glimpse of Amitabh Bachchan from ‘Thugs of Hindostan’.
There has been a trend in Bollywood for years. Bollywood’s biggest and most awaited films are mostly released on Diwali weekend. Diwali is the biggest festival for Hindi speaking people in India and abroad. There are maximum holidays on this festival, so it is a good opportunity to release films. The makers hope that there will be a crowd in the theaters to watch the film. Usually, big stars start reserving these dates for their films in the beginning of the year. It has often been seen that films released on Diwali achieve box office success, but sometimes the opposite happens. Despite publicity and power of big stars, films fail at the box office. The same thing happened with a film released on Diwali six years ago.
The film was made in mega budget
Vijay Krishna Acharya’s ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ was the most expensive Indian film made at that time. The film was released in November 2018 and had an estimated budget of Rs 300 crore. Trade pundits had said that the film would have to earn more than Rs 500 crore in India to be a hit. Due to the star power of Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and Katrina Kaif, the makers felt that they would earn a good amount of money, but it did not happen and they had to give up.
Somehow I was able to find the budget
‘Thugs of Hindostan’ took a good start by earning Rs 52 crore on the first day, leaving behind all the collection records. After that the game changed again. Poor reviews and extremely negative word of mouth sank the film and the film was not even successful in saving face. On the fourth day it earned only Rs 6 crore and by the second Monday it was less than Rs 1 crore. In the end, ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ earned only Rs 151 crore in India and Rs 322 crore worldwide, which is a disappointing figure.
Makers took responsibility
By the second week, exhibitors were blaming Yash Raj Films and Aamir Khan for their losses. Many shows across the country were going empty. Even theater owners started demanding their money back. After this entire incident, YRF took responsibility and gave money to the exhibitors under minimum guarantee deal. ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ is one of the biggest box office failures in the history of Indian cinema. Aamir Khan also took responsibility for the flop of this film.
